Let Freedom Sing

“Let Freedom Sing” honors the powerful music of the American Civil Rights Movement, examining how these stirring anthems continue to drive social change today.

The program features evocative performances of classics like “We Shall Overcome,” “People Get Ready,” and “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

Audience members are taken on a journey through the influential work of artists such as Mahalia Jackson, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, and Pete Seeger, whose voices defined the soundtrack of a revolution.

“Remember your dream is your only scheme, so keep on pushing…”
-Curtis Mayfield

The program Let Freedom Sing is significant because it documents how music functioned as a vital engine for the American Civil Rights Movement.

Its importance lies in several key areas:
  • Historical Preservation: The program serves as a formidable chronicle of the activists, such as the Mississippi Freedom Riders, who used song as a tool to endure racism, inequality, and physical danger.
  • Music as a Tactical Tool: It explores how “Freedom Songs” were more than just entertainment; they were essential for communication when speech was too risky and provided psychological strength against brutality.
  • Cultural Connection: The program highlights how leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. leveraged the Black musical tradition—including spirituals and call-and-response—to foster the solidarity necessary for large-scale demonstrations.
  • Empowerment of Marginalized Voices: It illustrates how music allowed individuals outside of established leadership, particularly women and young people, to lead discussions and assume power within the movement.
  • Contemporary Relevance: It emphasizes that these anthems are not just relics; they remain adaptable tools for modern movements like Black Lives Matter and global human rights campaigns.
