Saint Francis University MLK Day
Convocation Rocks!

Saint Francis University celebrated Martin Luther King Day on the first day of the semester – Jan. 16 – with several different events.

SFU invited Key Arts Productions to join their campus community as they honored the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during their annual MLK Day Convocation. The JFK Theater was packed with audience members as they participated in a dynamic performance of King’s Dream, with them holding hands and singing songs of freedom, unity, and hope.

Lynne Banks, Associate Dean of Students at SFU, invited Key Arts Productions to present the multimedia presentation honoring the American civil rights icon. Campus community members listened to Incredible vocal performances of moving songs like Amazing Grace, What’s Going On, and Blowin’ in the Wind by Nathan Harmon and Tasha Montfort.

Joseph Patterson of Key Arts provided thoughtful commentary, which included provocative questions such as, “What would you have done during the movement? Would you risk your life for social justice?” Accompanied by powerful video images of the courageous individuals who struggled for freedom,  Patterson reminded the audience that the dream has not been fulfilled and we can work together to change the world today.

The day’s festivities included “MLK Lunch at Torvian,” mass at the Immaculate Conception Chapel, and a discussion titled “How do WE Discuss Race in Schools?”

The day was highlighted by a convocation speech delivered by Joshua Pollard, CEO and President of Omicelo, a mission-driven real estate investment firm.

Shields School of Business Dean Randy Frye and Associate Dean John Miko presented junior accounting major Ardonntrell Williams with the SSOB’s Dare-to-Dream Award as part of the festivities.

The Dare-to-Dream Award originated three years ago and honors the legacy of Dr. King. It is a financial award presented annually to a student who exemplifies and promotes Dr. King’s values of service, equality, justice, and selflessness. A native of Philadelphia, Williams is also a standout member of the school’s track and field team.

“I’m honored to be chosen for the Dare-to-Dream Award,” said Williams.

The award is funded by donations from SSOB faculty, staff, and alumni.

“It’s wonderful to honor a deserving student with an award celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King,” said Frye.
