A unique Learing Experience for Kids

Children explore the legend of Billie Holiday by focusing on her role as a musical pioneer who turned her voice into a powerful instrument for change.

  1. Jazz as a “Musical Conversation.”
  • The Concept: Kids discover how jazz is like a conversation where people take turns talking and making things up as they go (improvisation).
  • Billie’s Style: Kids learn that while most singers follow the beat exactly, Billie liked to “lag” behind or jump ahead of the beat, a technique called phrasing. It made her songs feel more like she was telling a personal secret. Kids listen to and clap along to Billie’s classic songs.

  1. The “Voice as an Instrument.”
  • Learning Point: Billie Holiday didn’t just sing words; she used her voice like a saxophone or a trumpet.
  • The Gardenia: See pictures of her signature white gardenia hair accessory. Explain that just like a superhero has a costume, the gardenia was her “performance power” symbol that helped her feel confident on stage.

  1. Courage Through Music
  • The Message: Billie was one of the first famous singers to perform “protest songs.” She used her fame to speak out against unfair laws and racism, even when it was dangerous for her to do so.
  • The “Lady Day” Nickname: Holiday’s friend, saxophonist Lester Young, gave her the nickname “Lady Day” because she carried herself with the grace and dignity of royalty, even during hard times.
