Principal,  Central Regional High School

The Getting Along program teaches several practical conflict resolution skills designed to help young people manage disputes effectively. Key examples include:

  • Active Listening: Learning to hear and understand the other person’s perspective without interruption or judgment.
  • Managing Emotions: Techniques for “cooling off” and staying calm during a conflict, such as deep breathing or taking a timeout.
  • Perspective-Taking: Understanding that different viewpoints are natural and learning to see a situation through someone else’s eyes.
  • Effective Communication: Using assertive and respectful “I statements” to express feelings (e.g., “I feel upset when…”) rather than blaming others.
  • Collaborative Problem-Solving: Brainstorming multiple ideas to find a “win-win” solution that makes everyone happy.
  • Seeking Help: Recognizing when a conflict is too complex to handle alone and knowing to turn to a trusted adult for guidance.
  • Practical Negotiation: Using simple strategies like taking turns, sharing, or even choosing a fair way to decide, such as flipping a coin.
